What to check before buying
Storage is expandable
Sony documents M.2 SSD expansion for PS5, with requirements and instructions by console model group. USB extended storage can hold PS5 games, but they must be moved back to the console or M.2 drive before play. A full drive is therefore a different buying issue from failed hardware.
Cooling parts vary by revision
The original PS5 family includes CFI-10xx, 11xx and 12xx revisions. iFixit documents fan cleaning and replacement, and warns that replacement fans vary among early models. Find the CFI number before buying a fan or cover. This page does not treat later Slim or Pro internals as interchangeable with the original family.
Used-console condition
Test the console under a game load for abnormal fan noise or shutdowns. Check HDMI output, charging for controllers and disc behaviour on a disc edition. A repair history should name the CFI group and component; storage upgrades and dust cleaning are different from an internal cooling fault.
